South West Art on Show

Visual Arts

The School of Arts and Humanities South West Arts Program is up in lights at the moment with two concurrent exhibitions featuring work from ECU staff and students.

Friday, 3 June saw the opening of ‘The Survey’, the major biennial exhibition showcasing the vibrant identity of the South West and celebrating the work of local artists. Selected from a range of entries that encompass a wide variety of arts practice, this exhibition provides a current and engaging snapshot of the dynamic South West art scene.

Included in the esteemed selection of works were two ECU Honours students, Rebecca Corps and Daniel Kus whose pieces, ‘Duck L’orange’ and ‘Man’s Best Friend’ respectively, are currently on display in the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries (BRAG) in the Chapel Gallery. The major prize of $5,000 and a solo exhibition at BRAG was awarded to ECU South West Visual Arts sessional lecturer Helen Seiver. Her piece ‘Cloud Seed Express’, a sculpture made of recyclable materials using metal components and welding, references a concerned reaction to global warming/lack of rainfall.

“It’s a tongue in cheek look at the serious issue of drought and cloud seeding. I’ve used trolleys to display ideas that have either led to or could help with global warming”. Helen’s piece was also purchased for the City of Bunbury Art Collection.

Running concurrently at BRAG in the Convent Gallery and making its debut on Friday evening was ‘Painting 2’, a collective display of work from the South West Campus’s painting class. Students were given the opportunity to create works using a multitude of different methods, and the freedom to explore both perceptual and conceptual approaches to painting. Through studio arrangements and external site visits, students addressed personal themes through images that attempt to speak directly to the human condition.

Dr Donna Mazza, Art Coordinator at ECU’s South West campus said the concurrent exhibitions opening on Friday were both met with sterling success.

“The director of the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries, Julian Bowron, acknowledged the work of ECU South West as key to the flourishing of visual art in the region and was effusive in his support for the exhibition by our third year painting students.”
