Screenwriting excellence recognised

WA Screen Academy

A story about a young man’s first night in his bachelor pad – which may turn out to be the last night of his life – has won ECU graduate Bill Scheggia a WA Screen Award.

The WA Screen Awards (WASAs) are the premier celebration of Western Australian screen culture, celebrating excellence and achievements in feature film, short film, web series, music videos, television production, documentary, games and interactive productions.

Mr Scheggia wrote Madhouse as part of his film course at ECU. The film won the WASA Award for Best Script – Short Form and it’s an accolade that he is humbled by.

“It’s a fantastic honour,” Bill said.

“There is so much talent around in Perth and to be out there working in the industry is a great feeling. It’s wonderful to be validated by my peers,” he said.

Mr Scheggia graduated from the WA Screen Academy with a Master of Professional Communications (Screen Studies) in January this year and he is already well on the way to fulfilling his career dreams.

“One of my television series scripts has been optioned, which means producers have secured the rights to develop it further,” Mr Scheggia said.

“I’m also developing a number of short films and features.”

Mr Scheggia was drawn to scriptwriting because he’s always been interested in telling stories but he said it wasn’t an unswerving path.

“I went from journalism, to directing and finally found where I belong, with scriptwriting,” he said.

“I’m excited by the future of television and film because the industry is developing so fast, particularly with the advances in television series being made for the internet.

“It’s such an exciting time to be a writer,” he said.

Congratulations also to ECU graduates Lauren Cleary and Dominic Pearce who were awarded Best Music Video at the WASAs.

Madhouse will screen at the Revelation Film Festival as part of ECU Favourites, a free event at Luna Cinemas on Monday, 6 July.
